MS Teams: Enabling New Teams

Summary

Last Fall, Microsoft introduced new Teams. The new Teams desktop client is reimagined from the ground up with performance in mind, providing a faster, simpler, and more flexible experience. Moving forward, new features and enhancements by Microsoft will be available exclusively in new Teams. On March 31, 2024, classic Teams will be deprecated by Microsoft

Task: Switch to new Teams


Instructions

Step 1 - Open Microsoft Teams on your desktop.

Step 2 - Click on the toggle in the upper left corner of the application.

Outcome

The new Teams (work or school) application will launch automatically. Note, you will see two Teams applications - New Teams, and classic Teams. Classic Teams will be discontinued by Microsoft on March 31, 2024. Up until that time you may choose to revert between the two. On April 8, 2024 the classic Teams application will be automatically uninstalled by ET&S.

Note: If you see an error message "IT is blocking this install" you may need to clear the Teams Cache. This knowledge base article has detailed instructions on clearing the cache. 

Important Information for macOS users

Installation

Flipping the new Teams toggle on macOS will download and launch the new Teams Installer package, which may require administrative access. For managed devices, new Teams is available in macOS Self Service. You must be running on macOS Monterey (12) or higher. For assistance installing new Teams, please contact Client Services
 

Enable Screen Sharing Permissions

In macOS, you must approve Screen Recording access and restart Microsoft Teams (work or school) before you can share your screen. You can enable this by opening System Settings and selecting Privacy & Security > Screen Recording.

Will my device, video and notification settings transfer?

Some settings may need to be reconfigured. Once new Teams has installed, we encourage you to review your device, video (including custom backgrounds) and notification preferences prior to joining your next meeting.
 

Where are my Saved Items?

Teams classic offered the ability to save items – this feature is not currently available in new Teams. Although Microsoft has indicated it may revive this functionality in the future, for now, they recommend using Teams classic while it is still available to access Saved Items.

New Teams for Education defaults to Grid view on install. If you prefer List view, you can modify this setting. Go to Settings > Appearance and accessibility from the “…” menu at the upper right.

What happened to the Contacts list in the Chat tab?

Microsoft has moved Contacts to the People app. You can find People by clicking the three dots “…” in the left navigation bar. To pin the People app to your sidebar, right click the app then select “Pin.”
 

What if I Want to Continue Using Classic Teams after March 31, 2024? 

The move to new Teams is driven by Microsoft. The classic Teams application will be deprecated on March 31, 2024 and will no longer be available.

Instructions

Step 1 - Open Microsoft Teams (work or school) on your desktop.

Step 2 - Click on the 3 dots in the top right menu bar. This will open a new drop down menu.

Step 3 - Select the toggle button to turn off New Teams

Outcome

The classic Teams application will launch automatically and new Teams will close.
