Canvas: Embedding an Image into a Discussion Reply as a Student

In the discussion reply if you want to embed a personal image one way is to select the image from your personal Files area.  You now have 2 options on how you can add your image. You can pre-populate the personal Files area in your personal Files area under your Account or you can now upload the image directly to Files from within the Discussion reply.

Option #1 - Add the image to My Files area from within the Rich Content editor

These instructions show you how to upload and embed an image from within the Discussion post reply.

  1. Navigate to the desired Discussion in a your Course.
  2. Click Reply in the Discussion post.
  3. Click the Embed Image icon (see image below) in the Rich Text Editor.
  4. Select the Canvas tab.  This opens to your Files area.
  5. First click on the My Files folder to activate the Upload file button.
  6. Next select Upload file to open the browse window to locate the file on your computer.
  7. Select the image and on the bottom right side, select Open to add the file.
  8. Next update the Attributes.  Enter any of the following; Alt text, Decorative image, Dimensions.  The image size can also be adjusted after the image is in the reply by clicking on the image and resize.
  9. Select Update to upload the image to the discussion post.
  10. Enter additional text in the discussion reply as desired and select Post Reply.

 

Option #2 - Pre-populate the My Files area with the image file:

Step #1

The Files in the Account area is where the student stores their files that is private to the student but can be accessed from your course.   

  1. On the left-side in the Blue Navigation bar go to Account and then select Files.
  2. In the Files area, click Upload.
  3. Browse for the image and select it, select Open to upload it.

Embed the Image to the Discussion Reply:

Step #2

  1. Navigate to the desired Discussion in a your Course.
  2. Click Reply in the Discussion post.
  3. Click the Embed Image icon in the Rich Text Editor.
  4. Select the Canvas tab.  This opens to your Files area.
  5. Browse for the image uploaded in the previous instructions and select it.
  6. Click Update to add the image to the reply.   You have the option to enter the image size in the fields or you can adjust the image size after it is in the reply.
  7. Enter additional text in the discussion reply as desired and select Post Reply.
