How to Find a Device Host Name or MAC Address

Summary

This article shows how to find the host name or MAC address of a device on both Windows 10 and Mac OS X.

 

How-To

Task: To find the host name on Windows 10

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left corner of your screen. 

Step 2 - Click on the gear icon on the left hand navigation menu that expands over the Windows icon.

Step 3 - Click on "System" in the Settings options

Step 4 - Click on "About" from the left hand navigation menu

Step 5 - Look for Device Name (see below)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Outcome

You should be able to find the host name of a Windows 10 device.

Task: To find the host name on Mac OS X

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Click on the Apple Menu at the top left corner of your screen

Step 2 - Open System Preferences 

Step 3 - Open the Sharing applet

Step 4 - Your computer’s local hostname is displayed beneath the computer’s name at the top of Sharing preferences (see below)

 

Outcome

You should be able to find the host name of a Mac OS X device.

Task: To find the MAC address on Windows 10

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left corner of your screen. 

Step 2 - Click on the gear icon on the left hand navigation menu that expands over the Windows icon.

Step 3 - Click on "Network and Internet" in the Settings options

Step 4 - Click on "View Your Network Properties" on the lower half, middle of the screen

Step 5 - Look for Physical Address (MAC) (see below)

 

Outcome

You should be able to locate the MAC address of a Windows 10 device,

Task: To find the MAC address on Mac OS X

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Click on the Apple Menu at the top left corner of your screen

Step 2 - Open System Preferences 

Step 3 - Open the Sharing applet

Step 4 - In the list on the left, select a service that is On

Step 5 - Select Advanced at the bottom of the applet

Step 6 - Select the hardware tab to display the mac address (see below)

 

Outcome

You should be able to locate the MAC address of a Mac OS X device.
