Canvas: Respondus - Faculty Overview

Faculty have access to the Respondus LockDown Browser. Lockdown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When students use Lockdown Browser to take a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading.

Best Practice for Respondus LockDown Browser

Virtual proctoring has requirements that some students may have difficulty meeting (webcam, microphone, a stable broadband internet connection, and a quiet space for taking assessments). Additionally, these systems can significantly increase test anxiety in students. We recommend looking at assessment best practices first, for assessment approaches to mitigate cheating. Reducing penalties for poor performance by utilizing lower stakes assessments can go a long way toward mitigating cheating.

Please note that it is easy to find instructions online on how to defeat Respondus Lockdown Browser. Using it does not ensure assessment integrity.

If you choose to use Respondus LockDown Browser:

  • Create a practice test using Respondus Lockdown Browser, and have students take it
  • Communicate to students in multiple places that your course requires Respondus Lockdown Browser for your course exams, and provide clear instructions
  • Provide a link for students to download Lockdown Browser within your course

Using the Tool

To ensure your first exam with LockDown Browser runs smoothly, have students take a few low stakes quizzes that require the use of LockDown Browser. Ideally, have students use the same computers/devices they'll use with the graded quizzes, including the same network/Wi-Fi environment. The latter is especially important if you plan to have a large number of students starting the quiz simultaneously from a Wi-Fi network. One option is to leave a quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer or Wi-Fi network.

  • It is supported on Windows, Mac and the iPad.
    • It does not work on Chromebooks.
    • It does not work on Linux O/S
    • It does not work on smartphones

TO UPDATE: For Windows users, start Respondus LockDown Browser, select the “i” button from the toolbar, and then click “Check for Newer Version”. The version will be displayed and you will be able to download the newer version if one is available.

For Mac users, start Respondus LockDown Browser, select “ABOUT” from the toolbar, and then click “Check for Update.” The version will be displayed and you will be able to download the newer version if one is available.

You can also update LockDown Browser by downloading and running the full installation program again.
