Canvas: Supported Document Types

This article describes the Canvas DocViewer as well as supported document types in Canvas.

What is the DocViewer?

The Canvas DocViewer automatically converts common documents types into web-viewable and interactive learning experiences. DocViewer replaces the current Box previewer and Crocodoc annotation tools in Canvas and provides improved performance.

DocViewer contains all the same document types and annotation types, with additional functionality, and provides a more consistent user experience. DocViewer also gives Canvas a stronger technical foundation to improve existing features and develop new features and product enhancements.

Supported File Types

The following documentation and image types are supported for both document previews and annotations:

Supported Document Types

  • Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOT, DOTX, DOTM)

  • Microsoft Excel (XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLS2003) DocViewer only views the defined print area of the spreadsheet

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX)

  • Microsoft Project (MPP)

  • Portable Document File (PDF, XPS)

  • Data (VTX, TXT, CSV)

  • Rich Text Format (RTF)

  • OpenOffice (ODT, OTT, ODS)

  • Markup Language (HTM, HTML, MHT)

  • Mail Message (MSG, EML, EMLX)

  • eBook (EPUB)

Supported Image Types

  • PNG

  • GIF

  • BMP

  • AutoCAD (DWG, DXF)

  • Visio (VDX, VDW, VSD, VSDX, VSS, VST, VSX)

File types that are not supported can still be uploaded, but there will be no preview available on the site. The file will have to be downloaded and viewed in the correct program.

For Example:  The .pages file type from a Mac will be uploaded, but will have no preview option. If downloaded and extracted on a Mac it will open in Pages, but if downloaded on Windows it will not open, as the .pages file type is not supported on Windows.

The best practice for unsupported types is to save the file initially as .doc or .pdf or another cross platform supported file type.
