Answers

A1 - I like the current macOS I am using; do I need to upgrade?

  • Yes, the upgrade is mandatory as the  ET&S is working towards standardizing to Big Sur across the environment. Being on the latest macOS will allow us to offer a more stable, secure, and feature enhanced computing experience. Standardization will also allow us to provide a better support experience.

  • The Big Sur OS upgrade will be “self-serve” and with some guidance below, you will be able to transition to the new OS seamlessly on your own.  We encourage you to download and install Big Sur from the App Store.

How-to Download and Install

Task: To download and install macOS Big Sur from the App Store

It takes time to download and install the macOS, so please make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed or just prior to leaving campus for the day.

Instructions

Step 1 - Navigate to the App Store

Step 2 - Choose the Apple menu > App Store

Step 3 - In the search field type in Big Sur and select View

Step 4 - Select Get

Step 5 - Big Sur will begin downloading (time to finish is dependent upon the speed of your internet connection) Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to begin the OS installation > click Continue

Step 6 - Agree to the licensing information

Step 7 - Click Continue (you may be prompted to re-enter your credentials to begin the installation)

Congratulations! You’re now on your way to the new macOS Big Sur! The system will restart and it will take roughly 30 minutes to complete the installation.

 

Outcome

You should be able to download and install macOS Big Sur from the Apple Store.
