Moodle - Creating a Course Title

Tags PSU

This article describes how to create a course title in Moodle.

Moodle courses are organized by Topics or Weeks, which are basically modules for organizing content. Fortunately, each Topic/Week provides us with an editable area at the top similar to that of a header on a Word document. You can use this space to introduce the content of that topic, list possible objectives, insert a fun image, or even embed a video. Each Topic/Week has this header area, even the top-most topic, which we refer to as Topic 0. This is a perfect location to welcome your students by displaying a course title that's colorful and welcoming.

Editing a Topic/Week Header

  1. Login to myPlymouth
  2. Select the myCourses tab at the top of the page.
  3. Locate your myCourses channel. In the appropriate semester category, select your course title. You are now looking at your Moodle course page.
  4. Click on the Turn editing on button in the top right corner.
  5. Navigate to the topic/week of your choice, and click on the gear icon that's displayed on it's left side (see image below):

6.You are now looking at that Topic/Week's Edit header page. By default, the Section name field is defaulted to Topic [x] . If you'd like your own topic name, uncheck the Use default section name checkbox and type in your text in that field.

7.To create a more vibrant topic header, use the Summary text box below to type an introduction or description for the work to be completed in that Topic/Week (see image below):

8. When finished, select the Save changes button at the bottom of the page to view your work. Select the gear icon again to revise your header.

Inserting an Image

  1. Visit your Edit header area of the appropriate Topic or Week, again you do so by clicking on the gear icon.
  2. Inside the Summary text box, locate and click on the Insert/edit image icon in the formatting toolbar (looks like a tree within a picture frame):
  3. The Insert/edit image pop up window will appear. Select the Find or upload an image... button.

4. Moodle's File Picker window will appear. Click on the Upload a file link on the left side. Then click on the Browse... (or Choose File) button to locate the file on your computer. Once found, select the file and choose Open.

5. Back in the File Picker dialog box, select the Upload this file button at the bottom of the window.

6. The image file will then be displayed in the Preview section. Type out a quick description of the image in the Image description field.

7. Once completed, select the Insert button at the bottom to place the image in your Summary text box.

Tip: If your image is too big, select the image and click on the Insert/edit image icon again. Select the Appearance tab at the top to resize your image's dimensions.

To embed a video into your Topic/Week header, please review the following instructions:
