Enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 for Windows

Summary

Unable to access Skype, cannot activate Office Products or getting continuous windows security pop ups? Try enabling TLS 1.1 and 1.2 in Internet Options.

This is a default Windows setting - this article should only be followed if you are having trouble with a machine with Windows installed.

Internet Explorer is currently used by Windows to pass web-based credentials for installed applications. There is an industry wide move to end support for TLS 1.0, many cloud vendors have begun the process to update their applications to support TLS 1.1 and 1.2. As this initiative moves forward applications that have not been updated to more current versions may not work properly or at all for end users. Making sure these two security settings are enabled will be essential in the coming months as companies start disabling support for TLS 1.0.

Instructions on enabling TLS 1.1 and 1.2

  1. Search on the computer or within Control Panel for "Internet Options" OR

    • Open Internet Explorer ( Not Edge/Chrome/Firefox/Other)

    • Go to the Cog Wheel (Gear Icon) upper Right corner of browser

    • Select Internet Options from drop down menu

  2. Click on Advanced Tab (far right tab)

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the settings windows, under Security

    • Enable (check the box for) 

      • Use TLS 1.1

      • Use TLS 1.2

    • Click Apply then OK

  4. REBOOT

  5. If problems persist -- disable Use TLS 1.0

​​​​​​​Follow same instructions for enabling TLS 1.1/1.2, just uncheck use TLS 1.0, make sure to apply settings
