Zoom: Using Dual Monitors to View Participant Gallery while Presenting

Task: This article shows how faculty can run a Zoom session using dual monitors to show the gallery of participants while screen sharing or presenting a slide show.

Instructions:

Zoom has the capability to run sessions in dual monitor mode, which will show a full screen view of participants in gallery view while also screen sharing. This functionality is particularly helpful when teaching in a Zoom capable classroom where screen sharing or presenting a slide show would shrink the participant gallery view and make viewing remote learning students difficult. The following steps will provide instruction on using the dual monitor option in Zoom to solve this challenge.

Using Zoom Dual Monitor Mode in a Classroom

  1. Plug laptop into the AV cart’s HDMI/VGA input and turn the AV system on as usual.
  2. Place laptop into Extend Mode which will output to two independent “displays” - The laptops screen (Display 1) and the projector/local monitor/confidence monitor(Display 2). Extend mode instructions by OS are included in link above.
  3. Enable Zoom to utilize both display outputs from a device placed in Extend Mode. Open the Zoom Settings window, and select or check off ‘Use Dual Monitors’ under the General section.
  4. While in a Zoom call, click Share Screen and select and share Screen 2. Drag content to be shared laterally onto 2nd display which will share to projector, local monitor, confidence monitor and Zoom.
  5. The Gallery/Speaker view will remain visible on the laptops screen.
  6. Before launching a PowerPoint into Slide Show mode it’s important to deselect “Use Presenter View” under the Slide Show tab. Otherwise PowerPoint will use both display outputs and cover the Zoom Gallery screen with its Presenter View.

Outcome:

User can run a Zoom session using dual monitors to show the gallery of participants while screen sharing or presenting a slide show.
